Applying for a Student Visa in Spain: FAQs

Your motivation letter must clearly state a strong reason for studying in Spain. For example, you might need a deep knowledge of the Spanish language for linguistic research or to work with Spanish-speaking partners.

We also recommend mentioning that, after completing your studies, you’ll return to the UK and apply the knowledge you’ve gained there. This way, your goal appears to be education, not a plan to stay in Spain.

Prepare this letter carefully, as it plays a crucial role in the application process. There won’t be an opportunity to rewrite it with a new, more convincing reason.

Not necessarily! The course doesn’t have to be a full year, but it must be longer than 90 days to qualify for a student visa. If it’s shorter, you’ll only be eligible for a Schengen visa.

One key point to note: if there are fewer than 6 months between your visa’s approval and the end of your course, you’ll receive a simple stay permit instead of a physical residence card (if applying from within Spain). The student visa is issued for the duration of your studies, so if you want to stay in Spain longer, opt for courses that last 9 or 12 months.

For language schools, visas aren’t issued for more than a year, but if you’re studying at a university, you may be granted a two-year visa. Once your visa expires, you can always extend it.

Even if your ultimate goal is to move to Spain permanently, you don’t have to study for a full year. If you successfully complete a three- or six-month course, you can extend your student visa or convert it into a residence permit.

To stay in Spain legally after your course ends, you’ll need to apply for a visa extension or a residence permit. Visa renewal applications must be submitted within 90 days of your visa’s expiry, and the review process can take up to 3–4 months. While your application is being processed, you can remain in the country legally.

You can’t interrupt your studies, but holiday breaks are allowed if you’re attending a university. For language schools, breaks are simply the time between finishing one course and starting the next.

Yes, you can bring your spouse and children. To apply for family visas, you’ll need to submit all documents together at the Spanish Consulate in your home country. Even if you’re applying from Spain, your dependents will still need to submit their paperwork at the consulate in the UK.

Here’s an example: a woman with a student visa wanted to relocate with her child, who was no longer in school. She could apply from either Spain or the UK, but her child had to apply from the UK as a dependent. They submitted all documents together at the consulate and then moved to Spain.

If you apply from within Spain, each family member will need to submit their own application individually, rather than as dependents. We assisted one family of four, where the parents applied using matriculation from a language school and the children applied using enrolments from public schools. However, since the school terms differed, the children’s and parents’ visas were granted for different durations. This can lead to complications when extending visas, as the children’s visas won’t be extended without their guardians, and the parents’ visas may expire before the children’s. But the parents can modify their visas into a residence permit before that happens.

If you’re pursuing professional or higher education, you automatically have the right to work. For language courses, however, you’ll need to submit a separate application to get a work permit.

No, you can’t extend your student visa without documentation proving that you’ve successfully completed your previous course. This means passing your exams and receiving a certificate of completion is a must.
